Helping British homeowners transform their spaces on realistic budgets

Who I Am

A Designer Who Tests Everything

14 years of practical experience transforming British homes

My journey into home design started with necessity. When I bought a 1970s semi-detached house in the Midlands, I had two choices: hire expensive professionals or figure it out myself. I chose the latter. What began as a personal project quickly became a passion when I realised how many people wanted the same thing—beautiful interiors without the hefty price tag.

I studied Interior Design at Manchester Metropolitan University, where I developed a strong foundation in spatial planning and colour theory. But the real education came after graduation, when I spent years testing every technique I'd ever recommend. I've painted accent walls in different finishes, evaluated durability of sofa throws from John Lewis and Next Home, and rearranged furniture layouts in dozens of UK properties—always documenting what actually works.

That's the core of what I do. I don't write about design theory in a vacuum. Every guide, every weekend makeover project, every soft furnishing recommendation comes from hands-on testing. I know the frustration of picking the wrong paint finish. I've experienced the difference a thoughtfully arranged room makes. And I understand that real people have real budgets and real time constraints.

At standforadifference Ltd, I lead the editorial strategy for home improvement content. I mentor junior writers, oversee comprehensive guides, and continue testing new products and techniques. Over 200 detailed articles later, I'm still learning—and I'm still committed to making professional interior design accessible to everyone.

Core Focus Areas

What I Specialise In

Practical solutions for real homes and realistic budgets

Accent Wall Painting

From choosing the right colour to achieving a flawless finish—I've tested every paint type, finish, and technique. Learn which walls benefit most from colour, how to prepare properly, and how to avoid costly mistakes.

Soft Furnishings Updates

Refresh your space without replacing everything. I evaluate products from John Lewis and Next Home—testing durability, comfort, and value. Small changes like new throws, cushions, and curtains create surprisingly large impact.

Furniture Arrangement

Better flow changes everything. I help you understand how to position furniture for improved movement, sightlines, and functionality. Often it's not about buying new pieces—it's about arranging what you have strategically.

Weekend Makeover Projects

Real transformations you can actually complete. I specialise in projects achievable in 1–3 days without professional help. Paint, soft furnishings, and strategic rearrangement combine for dramatic results.

Budget-Friendly Refresh

I understand British homes and British budgets. Every recommendation considers cost, availability, and long-term value. Professional-looking interiors don't require large investments—they require smart choices.

Colour & Spatial Planning

Colour theory meets practical application. I help you understand how colours affect space perception, mood, and flow. Learn which shades work in different rooms and how to create cohesive colour schemes throughout your home.
